Water is one of the biggest challenges facing cities in the desert Southwest. That’s why this month, Mesa earned statewide recognition for taking that challenge seriously. Specifically, the Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) named the Central Mesa Reuse Pipeline (CMRP) its 2026 Project of the Year. Overall, this award goes to the state’s biggest and most impactful infrastructure projects.
What the Pipeline Actually Does
The CMRP includes a 10.5-mile pipeline and a new pump station. Together, they carry treated, reused water from Mesa to the Gila River Indian Community. In return, Mesa receives a bigger share of Colorado River water, one of the city’s most important water sources. In simple terms, this means Mesa is putting water it already has to better use, while also gaining more reliable water for the future.
Since March, the pipeline has been up and running. Already, it’s making a real difference: today, it gives Mesa enough water each year to supply about 30,000 households.
A Team Effort
A project this big takes years of teamwork. First, the City of Mesa partnered closely with the Gila River Indian Community. Next, Garney Construction and several engineering firms helped design and build the pipeline from the ground up. Altogether, these partnerships made this large infrastructure project possible.
Why It Matters
This award means more than just recognition. Instead, it shows that Mesa is planning ahead and making smart, long-term decisions about water, one of our most valuable resources.
As Mesa keeps growing, projects like this one help protect our water future. Ultimately, it took hard work from the City, our partners, and everyone involved to turn this pipeline from an idea into something residents can count on for years to come
