Overcoming Barriers: Mayor Mark Freeman Joins Celebration of 400 Inspiring Graduates
In a ceremony defined by resilience and redemption, Mayor Mark Freeman joined families and educators to celebrate a remarkable milestone for the Mesa community. More than 400 students who had previously faced obstacles that led them to leave the traditional school system walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas through Grad Solutions and Smart Schools.
While every graduation is a cause for celebration, this commencement carried unique weight. These graduates pushed through significant life responsibilities, personal sacrifices, and systemic barriers to finish every class and secure their futures.
A Community Built on Support and Success
In addition to celebrating individual achievement, Mayor Freeman highlighted the vital role specialized programs play in the local economy and social fabric. For those who once left school, Grad Solutions CEO Jim Lee and his team are doing more than teaching. They are creating graduation success stories one student at a time.
The Mayor also noted that the success of these 400 individuals reflects the impact of the HUB Centers (Helping Undo Barriers). By providing mentorship and critical resources, these centers enable learners to reach their full potential.
Stronger Together: A Collaborative Mission
The event served as a powerful reminder that education is a collaborative effort. Mayor Freeman stood alongside community leaders who share a commitment to second chances, including:
-
Shelli Boggs, Maricopa County Public School Superintendent
-
Dr. Greg Wymar, Superintendent of J.O. Combs Unified School District
-
Christopher Yap, CEO of Gabtech Global
-
Arizona Senator Keana Sears, District 9
Mayor Freeman extended sincere appreciation to the mentors, teachers, and staff whose daily dedication makes these milestones possible. Their commitment ensures that “putting students first” is more than a slogan. It is a lived reality for Mesa families.
A New Chapter for Mesa’s Workforce
As the graduates proudly shared, “We did it,” the broader impact became clear. Each diploma represents a new opportunity for a family and a stronger, more resilient workforce for the region.
Mayor Freeman remains a steadfast supporter of programs that empower residents to overcome barriers and build a brighter, more prosperous future for themselves and for the Mesa community.
